Volunteering & Service Learning Projects for Young People

  • African Library Project — Providing books to children on the African continent.
  • Do Something: Young People Changing Their World — Do Something provides "challenges" in 3 areas: community building, health, and the environment. These 2-week programs help kids develop life skills and give them the chance to lead.
  • Free the Children — an international network of children helping children at a local, national and international level. It was founded by Craig Kielburger in 1995, when he was 12 years old.
  • Help Save Animals and Their Habitat: 101 Things You Can Do
  • Idealist's Kids & Teens Action without Borders — helps people find the resources and support they need to help themselves and their communities. Its mission is to help build a world where all people can live free and dignified lives in a healthy environment.
  • Kaboom! — "Our work is child's play." Community-built playgrounds bring together different people to accomplish one goal: to create a safe, fun and challenging place for children to play with the support of their family and friends. 
  • National Service Learning Clearinghouse — Service-learning engages students in thoughtfully organized service activities that enhance learning outcomes while also strengthening communities.  "Starter Kits" for K-12 and links to many projects, conferences, and service organizations.
  • Roots and Shoots — International organization founded by Dr. Jane Goodall, with many homeschool chapters around the country. Gives young people service-learning experiences that benefit animals, the environment, and the human community.
  • Tree Musketeers — empowers young people to be leaders of environmental and societal change. Based in El Segundo, California.
  • Youth Service America — Building a global culture of engaged youth who are committed
    to a lifetime of service, learning, leadership, and achievement
  • USA Freedom Corps for Kids — good for younger kids, with ideas, games, coloring pages, more.
